Standing For Something

"Ask: “What’s possible?” not “What’s wrong?” Keep asking."

I keep very happily coming back to the Margaret Wheatley poem that I shared last week. Each time I read it another layer of it sort of clings to my mind and heart.

Awhile ago I was listening to the the Calgary Eye Opener on CBC Radio One. Each Wednesday morning they have the Unconventional Panel; a group of quick witted, connected and intelligent Calgarians who debate a question based on the current goings-ons in Calgary. I can't remember the content for that particular discussion, but I was struck by something George Brookman, one of the panelists and a very notable Calgarian said. He noted that we were becoming oppositionists as a society. That it is much easier to be against something than to choose to stand for something and that many of us were choosing this easier path. It's almost become a habit to critique first.

His comments stuck with me as I believe them to be very insightful and true. This is what was jumping out at me from the Margaret Wheatley poem as well. Rather than focusing on all the reasons that you should be against an idea, try to think of just one reason why it might be worth your consideration. It's funny how the things that we focus on can get bigger and something that initially may have seemed like a threat because it is different can become an exciting possibility.
