I referenced Dan Pallotta a couple of days ago with his very simple, but super powerful message of what it is to be human. Humankind: Be Both.
Dan is an empowering disruptor in the charitable/non-profit world . His Ted Talks about this sector have shaken us up in the best way. When he came out with a new one last week, I was eager to watch.
The dream we haven't dared to dream for me is summed up in three statements:
-
Why is there this idea that we have to surrender our profound potential for being to our profound potential for doing? Can we dream as boldly in the direction of our being as we do in industry and technology?
-
Don't ask what someone does. Ask them what their dreams are.
-
Recognize the fear in one another. To be human is to live with this fear.
I'm guilty of thinking that success in being and doing are mutually exclusive and for looking right past someone in my efforts to save the world. The example Dan gave of being at a conference and searching out the people with the name tag's on who can help you/your cause, I've been there. I can't count how many times I've asked someone what they do rather than what their dreams are, what their story is. That's one I can definitely work on.
I've been slowly figuring out that you can succeed at being and doing. That you can "have it all". Change the world, take care of yourself and have great relationships with friends and family. I'm really looking forward to all the bold dreaming about our being that I'm sure will come as a ripple effect from this Ted Talk. It's what I'm craving and I think many others too.
