Reflection

Where There's Smoke is a great podcast that explores self-development through pop culture, sports and current events. This morning I was catching up on an episode called Get a Move On (Community).  It was looking at the opportunities we now have through technology to create and sustain communities. They are exploring the line between technology serving humanity in this manner and not the other way around. How technology enriches our connections, especially across large geographical separations.

All of it was very interesting, but the part that stuck out for me was their reflection on why we need and enjoy community. That the joy comes as much from how we are within the context of community as it is connecting with others. That only through other people and our communities are we able to clearly see ourselves.

The episode is titled get a move on, as it was challenging the podcasters and listeners to take a look at our own communities we are a part of. Are they still thriving and serving us? Sometimes when we're trying to grow, it can be helpful to seek out new communities that help us to see ourselves in new light. It takes courage, as a new community is uncertain, which our brain of course tags as a threat.

It's an exciting part of growth and I keep coming back to those people I've met and will continue to meet at a heart level in various communities. They have helped me to see myself clearest and for that I'm eternally grateful.
