Aboriginal Day

Today is National Aboriginal Day, which I'm ashamed to say that up until this year I wasn't actually aware of even though today marked its 20th anniversary.

I've had it in my head for a couple of months to read as much of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report as I could and at the very least the 94 recommendations for change (which start on page 319). Today I'm going to commit to that. To be honest there is some white guilt in this. Maybe there has to be given my own heritage is from a province whose people brought about the extinction of an entire Aboriginal people.

I am also very curious about Aboriginal Culture. There's a lot in terms of philosophy and spirituality that resonates with me and seems more logical than any of the western based religions I've been a part of. They prospered on this land long before my ancestors even thought of boarding a boat to North American. That wisdom is part of our collective past by virtue of the lands we are now inhabiting and I'm keen to learn more.
