I'm about halfway through Paul Born's Deepening Community. Through his research, Paul has identified four steps/actions to be repeated to find deep community.
- Sharing our stories
- Enjoying one another
- Caring for one another
- Working together to make the world a better place
I'm in the share our stories chapter. Through stories, it shows the importance of being curious about why/how others are seeking community and to not be afraid of being vulnerable while we do this. This can include sharing stories with ourselves. What's the story we tell internally all the time that makes us who we are? Always balancing the inspirational with the practical, he also offers three questions to help us open up to do this:
- Why is it important I am here today?
- Who are you and what brings you to this work?
- What is your first memory or most meaningful experience of community?
In an effort to work out some of my own internal story, I'm going to use these three questions as inspiration for my next three posts. In the spirit of this book, I hope others will also share their stories back as I am very curious about why/how others are pushing around these questions.
