Possible

Tamarack's publication on deepening community is called Engage. Last year they did a print copy of it, which I was lucky enough to get a copy of at an event last month.

The theme of the whole magazine is possible. I have a Seth Godin quote on my wall at work that says "Changemaking happens when people fall in love with a different version of the future". The set of articles in this issue of Engage is all about helping to fuel, anchor and give hope to those changemakers.

The first article highlighted a study called Possible Canadas. It captured conversations with 56 diverse Canadians from government, business and civic society. It asked 10 questions on what it will take for the country to address its challenges and realize its potential.

As Paul summed in the article on this, people are energized by three things:

  • the determination of our young people;
  • the creativity in our cities; and
  • the way we are making diversity work.

Their hopes for the future are that:

  • we would become more ambitious;
  • we would transform our economy; and
  • we would restore our connections to one another and the land.

They summed up how we can go about this:

  • we need the courage to acknowledge our challenges; and
  • we need to engage and act in partnership to address these challenges.

The final quote on the back of this issue of Engage is " In spite of current ads and slogans, the world doesn't change one person at a time. It changes as networks of relationships form among people who discover they share a common cause and vision of what's possible" Margaret Wheatley and Deborah Frieze.

This study helps reassure us changemakers that the future we're longing for is possible. We just need to link up.
