Survival of the Kindest

If you mention survival of the fittest, everyone knows what you are referring to. If you look a little harder you also see aspects of this theory from Darwin in various aspects of our society. Countries are measured by GDP. Individuals are graded on a curve that forces an equal number of people on the top and bottom. This competitive nature shows up over and over in our lives.

What Darwin evolved his theory to later in life is less well known. He came to view survival as having as much to do with cooperation, reciprocity and symbiosis as competition.  Taking care of one another and looking out for one another is why we have survived. Community is in our natural way of being. Survival of the kindest is picking up steam.

The above is a summary of one of the chapters in Paul Born's Deepening Community. I'm going to take a couple of days to explore how I'm having courage to try to plant these seeds of kindness in my community.
