It's always interesting to hear all of the different descriptions for millennials. What drives us. What we want for ourselves. How we want to spend our time. There's lots of information putting us into this millennial box so that people can understand how to market to us and employ us. For the most part I identify with a lot of the millennial traits (confident, connected, open to change, willing to pay more if something has value, especially a social benefit).
Upworthy (a media company on a mission to change what the world pays attention to) sees the millennial as their target audience and I like how they describe it: the Daily Show Generation, people who care what's going on in the world, but don't want to be boring about it."
It's one of the descriptions of millennials that I really like and agree with. Because a lot of traditional media doesn't resonate with us, we don't pay attention to it. This is seen by many as not caring. We just don't like the medium though. We want to know more about the message. There's been a huge shift in this over the last 5 years in terms of how people are communicating. I'm sure at least partly because millennials have moved into being a much larger consumer power in the same time frame.
I'm very hopeful for my generation. They care a lot about others. They are social. They like to cooperate. They like adventure and value experiences over stuff. When they do buy stuff they want it to align with their values. It's going to be a fun next decade as these things begin to shape overall culture and society.
