Conservation vs Restoration

Since the 1100’s people in or in charge of Edinburgh Castle have have had a variety of different philosophies for taking care of the castle. It’s unbelievable how many times very historic portions of the castle turned into another use only to have someone very serendipitously discover it’s original purpose a hundred years later.

The debate since the 1800’s has been to conserve or restore. It’s an interesting question. To try to save and preserve things exactly as they were or to try to keep the spirit of things the same, but likely use new materials or other updates for the current time.

With historic places such as this castle, you can understand the conserve standpoint. What about if we ask ourselves the same question about projects, hobbies, houses, land, relationships of our own. What’s our philosophy and why? Either is a good option. I’m just wondering if I can get stuck in conserve (or even restore) because it might be easier to try and keep things the same when things need an update or maybe even a demolition.
