altMBA App: Contribution

The second question on the altMBA application is much scarier for me than the first. Naming the ways that I've contributed to an organization is scary for me, probably because I'm afraid that someone will disagree with me on this. I'm leaping past my fear of worrying about how someone else will judge this answer by posting this for feedback.

Tell us about a time when you contributed more than expected.

I had the privilege of joining a charity at a time when it was reconsidering its identity. The organization was in the beginning stages of planning for a capital campaign to expand its building. Since this time, I've heard that you shouldn't enter a campaign unless you are prepared to be transformed and I'm so lucky that I got to have a front seat to the transformation. It wasn't until I looked back that I see all the ways the work I was doing has helped create the organization's vision for the future. From dedicating countless hours to community engagement, the results of which significantly shifted the organization's vision for the future, to fostering relationships with our first major donors and in the process getting to help shape the new, innovative and impactful projects that will define the organization in the future. I thought that I would just be raising funds for other people's big dreams and one day I realized I had poured in so much that the organization's biggest dreams had become intertwined with where my heart was pulling me. In that process I'd also helped re-define the organization's priorities to increase the value placed on authentic relationships and to create a culture of caring.
