They Must Need it More Than Me

I'm seriously lucky in those I get to be surrounded by. A friend of mine said one of the most beautiful things to me this week. She said her mom always used to tell her if someone stole something from you that it must mean they need it more than you do. It's probably one of the single most generous things I've ever heard someone say.

It's upside down thinking at its finest. What if when we feel our space invaded and someone has literally stolen our personal things, we lean into empathy. We assume that this is a good person who must be stealing in desperation. It is counter-intuitive to most people's reaction.

I was humbled and felt a little ashamed that previous to this I would have been really angry if someone had stolen something from me. It just goes to show the power of the narrative in our heads. One conversation with someone and I've totally flipped a perspective that I've held my entire life. How exciting is that. What else is there to flip?
