Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.
Martin Luther King
Altruism. How do we create a culture of it? Why is it so much harder than creating a culture of hate? Why do we make so many assumptions about the motivations or hearts of others? It's hard to imagine what Dr. King would think now of the world around us. Of the hate that so many people showed in their hearts last week. That I'm frightened to say, louder voices here in Canada are chiming in on. They are exposing the darkness to the light. Something that until the last year or two, would not have been considered appropriate outside of private company.
It's uncomfortable, but maybe it's the messy middle on the way to the light of creative altruism. Maybe it's good that's finally out in the open so that we're able to have an honest conversation. That we are able to see one another clearly and figure out how to amplify the light. There are many of the alt-right who are full of hate. They feel their country has left them behind. Perhaps it did. I honestly believe that that kind of hate and anger only comes from deep hurt. Hopefully now that the hurt is out in the open we can talk about it as there is so much hurt on both the left and right sides of the political spectrum. Now's the time for curiosity. To understand where that has come from and to start figuring out how we bridge the divide.
