Your Truth

I'm still working through the Five Traits of Moral Leadership from Acumen. It focuses on two core aspects in moral imagination and moral courage.

On moral courage: "I believe leaders learn courage. You become courageous by practicing courage. It starts with speaking your own truth, even if your lips are trembling."

This statement made sense when I thought about it and yet it was like a light turning on in my head. There's something about it that makes my heart sing and something kindle in my stomach. The idea that courage is a skill that can be learned not a trait that you are inherently born with as I think many assume. How often does someone say to us or we say to ourselves that we can't do that for whatever perceived or real reasons.  How often do we buy into those reasons and not start shakily standing on our courageous legs that might not be as well used as we would like. Getting to speak our own truth is probably the hardest part. It means being vulnerable and letting others in. Sometimes the way to start practicing is to admit that you have fear about speaking up and being courageous and then having a larger conversation about why.
