One of the main characteristics in romantic music is the long melodic and harmonic lines. We went from neat 8 – 16 bar arcs in the classical era to pushing this to the nth degree for some composers in the romantic era.
Today while I was listening to CBC Radio 2 the host wondered what it would be like if we found all long lines in our life so romantic. Could the line at the grocery store or a long line of traffic be romantic? Could it be a time to revel in the beauty around us and to just be. Can it be a reminder to put our hurry aside and let these times be a reminder for us to slow down and find the romantic in any moment.
As someone who is always in a hurry, I'm going to try and flip these situations into the possible and see how many romantic long lines I start to notice in my life.
