Dangerous Triangles

One of my favourite books from the altMBA reading list, and actually one of the easiest to read, was the Coaching Habit

In it the author introduced me to the Karpman Drama triangle.

DramaTriangle

This triangle highlights the role(s) that someone is likely in when things aren't working anymore. When there is conflict or when you just seem to be stuck. We usually have a favourite role to play.

For me, it's the rescuer. It's tricky as it feels like you're doing something good. How can helping someone be bad?

What's the way out of the triangle? Switching into coaching mode.

Asking great questions can pull yourself out of whatever role you're stuck in and help others come out of the triangle too. I usually get stuck in the triangle when I'm just barreling forward with something. When I take a step back and try to think of a question, it brings you back a little. You can see who is playing what role and hopefully use curious and generous questions to get yourself and others out of the triangle's pull.
