What’s Equal?

What is equality? How do we define it? How do we know we have it? In his Ted Talk How Equal Do We Want the World to Be?, behavioural economist Dan Ariely gives us some information on this.

He shows that no one actually wants complete equality (at least with wealth). Many people want more equality than we have now; however, they still want some amount of inequality to exist.

It was a very interesting way to spend a little less than nine minutes. The statement that's sticking with me is when Dan quoted philosopher John Rawls. Rawls defined a truly equal society as when any member of society would be willing to enter into a random place within it (Income percentile, ethnicity, geography, etc.).
