Option B

Sheryl Sandberg is an inspiration. I've written about her a number of times before including when she gave her commencement speech at Berkeley  and her TedTalk about why we have too few women leaders.

Yesterday I was driving to work a little later than usual and was lucky enough to catch her interview on CBC's The Current about her new book Option B. It's about how sometimes we have to live with Option B and if we have to we should make it the best damn option we can.

"Lean into the suck" was advice that her Rabbi gave her after she lost her husband.  To not try to fight the sad moments, but to let yourself work through them.

We often say when we comfort that things will be OK. That we need to look on the bright side. I appreciate that sentiment, but I also feel like it's because we're trying to move past the sad moments too quickly. It's can be a way of going around what's happened rather than through. You have to be mourn the loss of Option A before you can embrace and feel grateful for Option B.
