On May 28, I'm running the 10K in the Calgary Marathon as part of the charity challenge. I'm running for Accessible Housing.
A small fraction of houses and neigbourhoods in Calgary are accessible compared to the thousands of people who require an accessible home.
I'm running because we are a family that lives with arthritis. There is a good chance that someday we will need an accessible home to live in and I hope when/if that day comes we are able so stay in community. We do what we can now to make sure that when anyone faces that situation, they will have that same right.
You can support our team and this cause here.
I'm onto my second poem of sorts this year, with a third already begun. This one is about the fear of arthritis that we try to use resilience with everyday.
A Monster Lurks
A monster lurks in the shadows. Quietly waiting for its chance to pounce.
Kept at bay by modern medicine, the monster bides its time.
Smiling young faces. Not who you assume are the shadow’s prey.
Faces looking out into the world wondering how many shadow-less days remain.
Finding what’s possible in every day, the smiling faces turn to hope and love.
They hope others will help bring the monster out into the light.
Taking away its power to bring the shadow and loneliness.
Making sure everyone belongs.
