Choosing Our Lives

I'm continuing my love with Mentoring Moments this week. The latest episode I listened to is called Marriage, Mistresses and Mountains.  Host Denise Restauri invited Jo Piazza to share the wisdom that she collected while travelling around the world sourcing wisdom on marriage.

The two pieces of wisdom I've taken away is to choose your life every day and the importance of having our relationships and family within a larger community.

Jo Piazza discovered Europeans think North American women make this big deal out of engagements and weddings and then go into cruise control once they are married. European women believe that marriage is the big journey and what we should put our energy into. That we need to make a conscious choice to choose our partner everyday. This also extends to our job, family, friends, etc.

Jo also visited polygamous tribes in Africa where the women had chosen to have more than one wife in their family in order to have more individuals to share the responsibility of caring for a family. In North America we can make our family and our relationships quite insular. In other cultures it's normal to have others as part of our family life. To have a whole village raising our children and being a part of our own growth.
