Different Kind of Comedy

Stand-up comedy has not been something I've traditionally enjoyed. I usually associate it with laughing at the expense of someone else.

A new generation of comics has brought a different look at this. It's a mix of comedy and storytelling, which also includes deep insights into the world around us.  Rather than dividing us by laughing at others, these comics take the less obvious and higher road of bringing us together through wit and thoughtful commentary powered by empathy.

Hasan Minhaj is one of these comics. His latest special on Netflix "Homecoming King" is an hour and 12 minutes well spent.  The subtitle on the show is the "New Brown America". It outlines his life growing up as a child of immigrants in America. He share stories of islamophobia post-9/11, challenges with inter-racial dating and the apparent "conditional" love from brown parents.

Hasan, and other comics like him, prove that hope, love and empathy are the strongest forces we have and they can even be funny too.
