Take me back to that snug green cove
Where the seas roll up their thunder
There let me rest in the earth's cool breast
Where the stars shine out their wonder
And the seas roll up their thunder
This is the final verse of Let Me Fish off Cape St. Mary's, sometimes referred to as the unofficial anthem of Newfoundland and Labrador. It has a sweeping and wide ranging melody that definitely stirs something in you.
The last two lines of this verse are my favourite. There is something very poetic about the picture these words paint. Though I think this verse may actually be about taking your final resting place next to the sea, I've always associated it with the comfort that the thought of home brings me.
Something kindled this song in me over the last day or so and I've had it in my head. I think it's probably reminding me of the importance of getting grounded. To make sure that my feet are firm on my own foundation before I take a step.
