Here's part two of my reflections on Dean Caravalis' interview with Seth Godin from his blog Outrageously Remarkable. Specically I'm reflecting on this quote:
"…but I know that if I make it grow faster than it wants to grow, I’ll have to sacrifice and I don’t want to do that." – Seth Godin
We all want our ideas to spread and to grow. In general our society is also addicted to short-term gratification. The tricky part about this is an idea, a movement, a new product will take time to grow and often you need to let it grow at its own pace. The challenge is we tend to want to control the pace and force it to grow faster. This can mean making sacrifices.
I've lived these sacrifices. This forced growth for me usually shows up as taking everything onto myself and figuring out how to move it forward. I've discovered that doesn't work.
So now I'm trying to figure out how to nurture something much like a gardener. With careful water, sun and love the tree will grow at its own rate. The trickiest question to push through is have I tried to plant something in a place it doesn't belong? Am I trying to force it to grow?
