Habit or Bust

We each have a lot of ideas about what we would like our days to be filled with. Whether it's starting a side hustle, running a half-marathon or knitting some mittens.  Often the reason we haven't done these things is because we have a lack of time.

According to Nicolas Cole that's BS. The reason we haven't done it is because we haven't cared enough to build the habit. And even better news, forming new habits is hard.

However, if we really want something the first question we need to ask ourselves is how do I make this another thing I just do. Here are Nicolas' steps for doing that:

  1. How much time will this goal require in order for me to accomplish it effectively (to the best of my ability) each day?
  2. How much time do I currently have in my schedule for this goal, and is the amount of time I have available equal to the number of daily hours required for me to accomplish this goal to the best of my ability?
  3. If I don’t have the time required, am I willing to part with a current time investment and replace it with the aforementioned goal?

I can attest to this. I've managed to build some new habits (I'm writing two blogs a day right now in preparation for being away this weekend) and very obviously failed at other habits (making my health a priority). The fact that I've figured this whole daily blogging thing out though gives me faith that other habits will come too.

I do need to start being much more honest with myself by using Nicolas Cole's three steps. How much time will a goal take me and what am I willing to bump from my schedule to make it happen. At least this way I'm being upfront with myself about what's actually important to me.
