First Followers

We all know that being the first one to do something is important. The first person to put your hand up and answer a question. The first person to speak up when you know something isn't right. As this video so eloquently and cleverly points out, we need to value the second leader or the first follower just as much.

Being the first followed has the same amount of worrisome self-talk in our heads and the same unknown in terms of will people like and accept what we're about to do. Do we choose to join someone or sit back in the safety of the group?

In August when I was at a Social R&D gathering we were invited to take part in a First Nation ceremony to start our day. The member of our group that was leading us invited us to join in to the song she was singing. I grappled in my head to will myself to be that first follower, but in the end the moment passed without anyone joining in. When I saw this video over the weekend it brought me back to that moment. It reminded me of the importance of stepping in to being a first follower and of looking at who might be a first follower around me and celebrating their leadership.
