Giving Up Busy

Westjet organizational development guru Pam August facilitated the imagiNation 150 event I attended over the weekend. In the very beginning of this event she shared a personal goal she'd set for herself a few years ago – eliminate the word busy from her vocabulary. She intended this to remind all of us that we were here so we should try to stay present.

When she eliminated busy she noticed a number of changes. How are you or do you have a minute was no longer answered with I'm busy. She found that she was consistently more present, less anxious and was able to focus on the right things. All of this because of one little word.

The words we use to describe our lives mean something. Being dependent on the word busy contributes to a scarcity mindset in which we believe we don't have enough time to do the important things in our lives.

I've stated many times before that time is the great equalizer of people. It's one of the few things we all have the same amount of. The test of us as humans is figuring out how we use it.

So I'm going to try and take the same pledge as Pam and remove busy from my vocabulary. I hope it will assist me in making time for the right things vs all the thing in my day.

p.s. Pam also shared this video as part of her reminder on being with everyone in the room that day.
