A lot of people are talking about the magic of black women who came out in full force to vote for Doug Jones in Alabama. What I like about this article by Julia Craven at the Huffington Post is it acknowledges that these women didn't suddenly appear to save the day, they have been doing the hard and sometimes mundane work of organizing for years.
That's the amazing and frustrating thing about success. Everyone sees the tip of the iceberg and thinks it appears out of nowhere when really most of the mass is below the surface.
The great thing about this is it means anyone can do anything if you consistently put in the emotional labour. We've all got the same amount of time. It's just about having the discipline to show up everyday and the assurance to keep going even when your work is in the dark.
This isn't meant to take anything away from their achievement in Alabama. That consistent emotional labour is exceptional, otherwise we would have far more examples of stories like this. It's just to highlight the fact that if you care enough you can do it too.
