Bad Idea Generation

"I don't have any ideas."

"I'm not an idea person."

"I'm just not creative."

Part of getting great at generating ideas is accepting that you will generate and ship bad ideas. The purpose of the exercise though is to build the muscle and the discipline to learn to be open enough to come up with the ideas and then determined enough to put it out into the world.

If you don't have a list of ideas four, five or even 10 times longer than your list of good ideas, you probably didn't push far enough.

Our second assignment as part of the altMBA was to come up with 99 ideas. It was a lesson in quantity over quality.  That a bad idea shipped is far better than a good one that never sees the light of day.

The solution: stop being so judgemental about our ideas. Really what someone means when they say the above is: "I don't' have any (good) ideas." That's just the resistance talking. No one can come up with good ideas all of the time. You just don't see all the bad ideas below the surface.
