Practicing Remembering – Jan 10

When I tried to sign into Typepad this evening I got this fun message…

How fascinating!

Checked Twitter and it's been like this for about 3 hours, so I figured I better take things into my own hands and continue along. Luckily, emails actually go out from another service, so here you are with your daily dose of me and hopefully not noticing a thing.

Tonight I got to practice remembering. I was in a really amazing conversation and it was intentionally set out at the beginning of this session to try not to take notes. It forced us to stay present. We could follow-up after with questions and write things down, but in the moment the intention was to be present and also to build our muscle of remembering things.

It was interesting level of engagement that occurred. I don't think I saw one person reach for a notepad for the full two hours and I imagine many of us could recount our favourite parts of the conversation.

I was also impressed with how much I was able to commit to memory. As soon as the conversation ended I jotted down the points that I'd been making sure I held on to or asked someone to restate something.

I am always so impressed by individuals who seem to be able to recount large quantities of information and names, etc. I don't think I fully considered that this was a muscle to be built as well.

It's unlikely I will completely abandon my fanatical note-taking, but it definitely got me thinking about how in taking my notes I could be missing something important or losing my chance to consider my own response.
