Generous feedback – how do you give it? As Canadians we have a reputation of being nice and of apologizing for everything. While that stereotype is often exaggerated, it comes from somewhere.
It's a helpful trait when it comes to having patience with others, but perhaps a hinderance when there's a tough conversation to be had and when directness is actually the kinder route. When creating tension can actually help to move something forward.
This was one of my biggest learnings in the altMBA, that being a contrarian can be a generous and kind act. Previous to that I had labeled making someone else uncomfortable as unkind.
It took me about a minute to open my mind to the possibility and 11 months later I'm still working on walking what my mind now knows. It was a muscle that was pretty weak and the same way I'm still bringing some muscles back from breaking my arm in 2014, it will be a longer journey to get comfortable with using that one.
