I love when I'm in the car and get to hear a little bit of q on CBC. The host Tom Power is a Newfoundlander. I would have already been endeared toward him for this, but it also happens that we aren't too many years apart so we ran in some of the same musical circles and took some of the same courses together at MUN. It's a real pleasure to see how well he is doing and how his storytelling is coming to life for many.
Tonight Tom was interviewing Allan Hawco – another delightful character and storyteller from my home province. I love when he has other Newfies on because it makes me feel a little like I'm home at a party listening to them both having a yarn in the kitchen (Translation – yarn = having a chat).
It more than filled my Newfie heart, the interview also had a lot of wisdom. Tom asked Allan if he worried about how people would react to his new show, Caught, being so different from Doyle. Allan responded "you can't really worry about what others think. You have to go with your gut and stick with it."
The hard part is not letting other voices overwhelm our own and sticking with something long enough to ship it. It's where all the tension and doubt form. It's so easy to show up everyday in muted colours so that we go unnoticed. Or spend our time trying to diminish the light and colour of others because we think this is easier than standing up ourselves.
So let's spend out time staying the course and hopefully helping others persevere too.
