What I loved about conducting music was having a chance to bring together so many voices into one amazing piece. Each instrument/voice and person added their own colour to make the whole.
Every voice couldn't always be the same volume. You had to be conscious of how your part was fitting in to the overall. Even though you weren't as loud, you always understood that each and every part was necessary and dependent on one another. The melody line at that time was one-dimensional without the harmony or counter melody that accompanied it.
There's a lot about working together with others that holds true to these same principles that I learned as a musician and as a conductor. You can even feel the same magic when its all singing.
