Joy of Alone

All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” Blaise Pascal

Stumbled across this while perusing Medium this evening and getting caught in a clickbait article called "The Most Important Skill Nobody Taught You". Luckily, this time, the article lived up to its name.

So our challenge as humans boils down to the fact that we (well most of us) never spend time learning or being taught the art of solitude. Apparently we haven't figured a lot out about this given Mr. Pascal passed away in 1662. The rapid development of technology that encourages constant connectedness has likely pushed us further away from this too.

Being alone teaches us about ourselves. It's difficult to ever become self-aware with the noise of others constantly in our heads. Learning to just be and exist alone is a great gift to ourselves. The care we put into this relationship will pay dividends in all aspects of our lives, especially as we interact with others.

Sometimes spending time on our own and getting comfy in the stillness and silence of those moments is the best prescription for any challenges we're facing in our lives.
