I try to be a fairly empathic person, it's the well of where I draw my patience. My issue with the depth of that well is often when someone defines their worth around status.
In reality I understand that status (however you define it) is important for some individuals. It's layered into our brains. It's a neural reflex.
Despite all the logic around this and never wanting to create an us and them thing about anything, I really struggle with finding the same level of empathy around people who have their identity linked with this. It's because I believe that your status is for you to define yourself and that you don't require external validation of this.
I'm quite conscious of the rub that this can create. I'm also aware that it's an opportunity for me to continue to build my growth mindset and be generously curious about understanding the root of this rather than practicing my eye rolls.
