“Ordinary people seek entertainment. Extraordinary people seek education and learning.” This was an excerpt from Benjamin Hardy’s article that popped up in my email today.
My previous M-O was bent toward education and learning. Since the end of my pregnancy, I’m definitely leaning toward entertainment. It’s a little crazy the number of YouTube videos I’ve watched and the workout my thumb has gotten on Instagram.
Some of that was inevitable for me. I really need good sleep to thrive and there are a lot of days I just wasn’t up to anything that wasn’t mindless. Now that my daughter is older it’s a bit better and I’m starting to realize how much I’ve eroded some of my old habits for learning.
Time to shift it back.
I’ve removed the YouTube and Instagram apps from my home screen (this tactic helped when I wanted to decrease Facebook usage.) I unsubscribed or unfollowed most of the content generation that was more entertainment focused. I also need to prioritize getting in bed as early as possible and not getting caught up in one more episode of a show.
Now I need to shift the entertainment consumption time to consuming content that inspires me and shipping my own output into the world. Initially this will mean writing more. We’ll see what comes next.
Being a Mom can be heavy. We have a natural tendency to give and give and if we aren’t careful we can dim ourselves in that process. I love devoting so much to my family; however, I can also see how I can use that as a crutch to give myself permission to coast. It’s a new challenge for me. To try to find the balance between being a devoted Mom and a happy and successful individual. Knowing that our habits become who we are, I trust that starting to make these small changes will help propel me from wandering to advancing on my path.
