Daily dose: June 6, 2019

Today’s learning comes from The Broad Experience podcast – Going on Leave. This one is a short (9 minutes). Well worth a listen as this is something all of us will have to deal with for children or parents for ourselves or our co-workers.

The guest this week, Rachael Ellison, works at the Centre for Parental Leave Leadership (who knew this even existed!). All they do is help organizations get better at supporting employees and the organization to transition into and out of leave.

What worked? Planning and an intentional process. They have a Next Step Action plan that figures out how to transition the person and their work onto leave and then another process for re-entry.

Rachael shared that poorly planned exits and re-entries create resentment from the employee and their colleagues. The enemy of success here is a lack of clarity. It’s a great opportunity to create more transparent and clear communication around delegation.

This is reaffirming a theme for me from this week around the importance of structure and planning to succeed. Even in creative worlds, you need a container to hold it all otherwise it’s just a mess. Planning wipes out uncertainty.
