Today is a big day. It’s possible the Raptors will win the NBA championship. We’re a big basketball family and my husband has been a fan since he was a kid. So my learnings are related to that.
1. “Nick (Nurse) doesn’t care about looking stupid.” This was from Zach Lowe’s basketball podcast from today and is in reference to the Raptors head coach. He’s been very creative in these playoffs, including breaking out a defensive scheme usually used in grade school. People teased him about this, but it worked so who cares. It reminded me of the episode of WorkLife relating to creativity and the suggestion we share an embarrassing moment before a brainstorming session. This tactic helped people get comfortable with laughing at themselves, which allowed them to take risks in their idea generation.
2. Sometimes you need to let go of the sleep schedule. I’m usually very strict about my 7-month old’s sleep. We’re always home at least an hour before her bedtime. Today will not be one of those days. We’re venturing out to watch the game in downtown Calgary. I live by an 80/20 rule and this is an occasion when we as parents are taking our 20%.
