Daily dose: July 10, 2019

The last month was taken up by getting ready for, going on and recovering from our vacation. Excited to be back!

Mom brain is a real thing. I definitely struggle to remember things after having my daughter. That’s why I was keen to listen to Adam Grant’s episode of WorkLife focusing on memory.

There’s actually a World Memory Championship and they aren’t savants competing. It’s regular people who used techniques to become memory champions. Here are a couple that were shared.

1. Create an image for what you need to remember and put it into a memory palace – a house in your mind’s eye filled with the images/words that will trigger the things you need to remember. When you need to recall the information, you walk through the house again and the images are where you cemented them. It helps if you attach as much colour and emotion as possible. If you need to remember to pick up milk, imagine being in your house and dumping a carton of milk on a loved one.

2. Experts don’t have superior memories, they’ve just built up a wealth of experience to draw from. The more you learn the better memory you will have.

3. Want to commit something to memory:

1. Take a break for 10 minutes, it improves recall.

2. Quiz yourself, build your muscle for retrieving information from your memory.

3. Tell someone else.
