“You’re out of line and I’m not changing.” Dr. Roberta Bondar

It’s been 50 years since the moon landing. CBC’s The Current did an episode dedicated to it this morning. They interviewed Canada’s first woman in space – Dr. Roberta Bondar.

She didn’t talk a lot about the struggles, preferring to focus on what she accomplished.

She did tell one story about a male astronaut who approached her and said she needed to be less forward and condescending when she spoke to others. Her response is the quote above. She was engaging the same way as everyone else, but it made people uncomfortable because she was a woman.

I love when people are so confidently themselves. No apologies. Here’s who I am, take it or leave it. I hope we can find more ways of celebrating a light being shone so brightly instead being of intimidated by its glare.
