Hate and anger are a challenge in our world. Apathy is too. I'm sure that I've been guilty of being apathetic at times or about certain issues. Sometimes it seems like there is so much to care about that we get overwhelmed and turtle inwards and turn it off.
I heard someone use this phrase today as the goal for a piece of art: turning apathy to empathy. They aren't targeting those who have hate in their hearts. They are targeting those who don't yet care and seek to use art to open their hearts in order to open up their heads to ideas about people and issues they may not understand or are ignoring.
That's why I love art. It is truly the greatest tool for education and understanding that we have. Words, presentations and facts have to work a lot harder to change the course of our society. Art has a power to divert the river in a brand new direction by changing many hearts at once.
