"I promise to always be nice".
This was the final, and surprise, vow that my husband said on our wedding day. It's a simple mantra that I try to live by and one of the reasons I love having him as a partner.
When shared with others the statement often elicits eye rolls or a list of reasons why I'm special and therefore able to live by this.
I really do believe in the genuine kindness of human beings. That deep down we always want to be nice to one another and to ourselves, but for some reason how we show up in the world is with armour made of sarcasm, judgement and negative self-talk.
This doesn't mean I don't slip up. I still get frustrated, angry and sad amidst all the niceness. I have to practice self-generosity then and make a little space to pour the niceness internally too.
This mantra is one of the reasons that I launched Kind YYC this year because I really do believe that one person and 33 acts of kindness can change the world around me. That one more act, thought or nice word has the power to tip the balance of the world for good.
